Symbolism of the Chakana or Inca Cross

by the Colca Specialist

Symbolism of the Chakana or Inca Cross

Worldwide, the circle is a recognized symbol of completeness. Autochthonous populations used the circle in an attempt to organized and relate to the Earth and to Nature. The circle is a means of creating a framework to access and assess the fundamental attributes of Earth and Nature, to which our physical bodies are inextricably bound.

We, in the latter days of linguistic adaptations, call this organized relationship The Medicine Wheel. The circle is a four fold path to discovery. An initiate travels the circle in a carefully choreographed dance of discard and uptake.

The dance begins and ends in the center. The south is the first destination and its represented by the serpent. The serpent is the quintessence of the south.
In an act of discard and renewal, the initiate sheds their skin, their mind set, their judgements and mis-judgements.

It is not possible to dance beyond the south if any pre-conceived ideas regarding the order of the world are retained. Shedding a past that no longer serves us, or that inhibits us with distress or trauma, cannot be done piecemeal. It needs to be done all at once, as an act of power.

In the west lives the cougar. Here, the initiate rides upon the back of the cougar to the barrier between realities. Through the act of altering perception, the initiate dances into non-ordinary reality and meets death and physical knowledge.

Rebirthed, into the ordinary world, the initiate claims life, physical and spiritual. The cougar is the embodiment of the warrior, living without fear, without the need of enemies. The warrior, living in full awareness of the moment and with purposeful intent.

Reaching the north, the ancient ones have left teachings for the initiate to utilize. hummingbird’s power is encountered here. The north is a place of mysteries, a place of knowing and of the unknowable, of the doable and that which cannot be done, but is by the hummingbird.

By aero dynamical measure, the hummingbird should not be able to fly, but they migrate long distances and can change directions in impossibly sharp angles. Hummingbird is the source of unknowable and undoable. It is said that for those who listen with more than their ears, hummingbird can impart great knowledge through its sweet song.

In the east, the initiate learns to soar on the wings of the condor. The east is vision, magic, translation, and emergence. In the east, the visionary translates visions into actions, bringing gifts to the world.

The energy is the power of the condor. The condor who soars above the clouds, whose visions extends above and below the horizon, who sees beyond linear time and space. The condor carries the initiate’s dreams to places of magical powers to be brought into everyday existence.

Center, without center, there are no directions, no above or below, front, back, left or right. You, the center and your resultant six directions create space. It is how each of us creates space. The agreement, that we all hold, allows for the negotiation of space between us, so that we can maintain the appearance of sharing the same physical universe.

The physical universe is composed of space, matter, motion, and time. We have agreements on each of these components. We agree that matter is solid, and that it can move from one point to another. When this movement occurs we say that time has passed.

Furthermore, we subdivide time into present, future and past. We assume that there is but one Universe. In the process of dancing the circle, we discover that the physical universe is paralleled by alternative realities.

Stand in the center of the circle. Above you is an imaginary point that represents your mind, an accurate record of all your experiences in the three universes. You take your mind with you from lifetime to lifetime.

You acquire a new body each lifetime. To the north is your shield, your front. To the right is the east, the rising sun, your weapon. Behind you, the south is your bag of tricks, the knapsack that contains all that is behind, to the rear. To your left, in the west, is the counsellor, the one who whispers truth to you, your ally. Standing in the center, visualize lines connecting your six directions. You will have created an octahedron, an enclosed space of spiritual completeness.

When the circle has been traversed in its entirety, and the lessons understood, the initiate has become a person of knowledge. The journey, to becoming a person of knowledge has touched all 22 locations in the circle, your dance has been successful. I am an immortal spiritual being, living lifetime after lifetime, in the physical universe. Dancing and laughing around the circle gives definition and degree to these lifetimes, being in the ever-present moment.

Naturaleza Activa´s Downhill Pichu-Pichu volcano

by the Colca Specialist

Naturaleza Activa
Downhill Pichu-Pichu Volcano

The best downhill mountainbiking in Arequipa.

Watch video in: http://youtu.be/StgtrpOq8SY

Because of its geography, Arequipa is one of the favorites destinies for mountainbikers. In other article I wrote about going downhill Colca Canyon but now I would like to write about mountainbiking in Arequipa. Arequipa has three impressive volcanoes that are the amusement park for arequipenian downhill mountainbikers.

In Arequipa there are three main downhill circuits and each one has the name of a volcano : Downhill Misti, Downhill Chachani and Downhill Pichu-Pichu. As you know there are many travel agencies in Arequipa who offer this kind of tours and their prices are cheap but the service is poor and the equipment quality is the same. So which one is the best? Checking different services with the help of the different guidebooks the best in the two-wheels business is Naturaleza Activa (naturactiva@yahoo.com).

Born in a family of cyclists, Eduardo “The Boss” Sánchez is the owner of Naturaleza Activa a travel agency which is the pioneer in this kind of service and their clients confirm their preference.http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/oosilnz/1/1288246583/tpod.html

Which is the secret of success of this company? Their passion for adventure , mountainbiking and professionalism. If you love adventure it´s difficult some times for you to find somebody who speaks and understands your language, but these guys do it. You are not just another gringo for them ,but a friend.

This way of thinking has lead them to success in this business. Another important component of their success are their mountainbiking guides: friendly, highly professional as tour guides and ex-downhill champions, experts not only in providing information but in having fun too. Another detail in their tours is the music.

They have more music than a deejay so you can listen the music you like in the trip instead of hearing the same boring tracks of peruvian music which are played in all the restaurants and gringo places you visit. Imagine listening Jimi Hendrix,The Doors, James Brown or your favorite music at 4,300 meteres above sea level watching nature in all its expression.

The prices are reasonable and the circuit which is the favorite of most of the tourists is Downhill Pichu-Pichu because the views are very impressive. In the first part, you can see the craters of Pichu-Pichu volcano surrounded by the andean landscape, covered with ichu grass and other plants adpated to high altitudes.

Then after some minutes you will arrived to a nice valley crowded of terraces of the inca period where the locals still cultivate broad beans, potatoes, lucerne among other traditional plants. At the end, you will see the desertic area close to the volcanoes, an area that because of volcanic eruptions , the fall of ashes and the lack of water, turned it into a desert ,forcing the incas to leave this place abandoned.

Downhill Chachani is a good option. You can go very high with the van and you can descend very fast but the problem is garbage and dogs on the way. The terrible smell of garbage and the presence of mosquitos and flies, make this place unpleasant. Dogs are another problem too. So that is why Downhill Pichu-Pichu is the best for the nature lovers.

Safety is another aspect which is important for Naturaleza Activa. All their tours are in areas far from Arequipa. Why? Because of the intense traffic and the erratic way of driving characteristic of peruvian drivers.

Mountainbiking in the downtown area of Arequipa is a risk, because there are no specific paths for cyclists like in Europe and of course there is no respect for the cyclists. Another reason is contamination. Arequipa is crowded of taxis and vans whose main combustible is petrol so if you are behind several cars exhaling the contaminating and toxic gases your nice mountainbiking experience will have a disgusting smelly end. Not recommended at all! I hope you enjoy the pictures and if you are interested in any article please write us to planet_x_adventures@hotmail.com and gladly we will answer all your questions. Thank you very much for your attention. Kodak Time my friends!

This a nice shot of Ubinas volcano here in Arequipa!

Rock and Roll girls ready for going downhill Pichu-Pichu.

Naturaleza Activa Tours are designed to have fun!

Naturaleza Activa is recommended by Lonely Planet´s guide book for one reason: Quality, safety and fun!

The views of the terraces are one of the main attractions of this circuit which is considered the best in all Arequipa.

Here in the countryside of Arequipa you will breath PURE AIR ! Pollution is the main problem in Arequipa so the best way to stay away from noisy groups and far enough from the smog of the city Downhill Pichu-Pichu is the best option.

If you are looking for something different Naturaleza Activa is the right option for you!

The Downhill Pichu-Pichu circuit was designed for having fun all the time!

After the adventure we go back to Arequipa againg to celebrate with some cold beers!

Trip Advisor: Is it reliable?

by the Colca Specialist

Trip Advisor is a web site whose main goal is to offer information to travelers from all around the world. On the net, there are many travellers blogs who share their traveling experiences on them, but most of the travellers before making a decision they check the information of a web site like Trip Advisor.

Many visitors don´t trust much the travellers blogs because many comments and suggestions are relative. In the case of those web sites specialized in traveling, the comments and the suggestions are going to be done according to a specific criteria, mainly based on an analysis of the services provided by those travel agencies, tour guides, or hotels.

Of course, travellers blogs are gaining terrain specially in the last years because many of them are written by people who have experience in this field of tourism.

The other problem with travel agencies web sites is that “all of them are very good” on the net. Most of them exaggerate about the quality of their services and when the traveller comes to Arequipa and books for a tour to Colca Canyon realises of the real situation: many travel agencies are not good even though that they are recommended in Trip Advisor.

As a specialist in organized trips in Arequipa and Colca Canyon, I checked many different forums about trips in Colca Canyon and Arequipa. I checked Trip Advisor forum too and I discovered that many travel agencies are becoming members of Trip Advisor with a specific interest: to write wonderful comments about their services provided.

Comments of backpackers are not reliable too. Most of them are looking for discounts and discounts are offered if they write “good comments” about the services provided by the travel agency they are traveling with.

If you check the comments about trekking tours in Colca Canyon it is incredible to see the quantity of exaggerated comments about tour guides, travel agencies whose services don´t really deserve those comments!

Because of Informality in Arequipa, a law was published recently. It says that all tour guides have to be professional or specialists in their areas. Travel agencies have to be formal.

All guides that do the conventional tour to Colca Canyon are registered and professional, but in the case of trekking in Colca Canyon 90% of the guides are ilegal and informal. They don´t speak english fluently ,just a few do it and their knowledge about the area is very poor.

The authorities are taking measures now to solve this problem.

Going back to the point, we cannot trust on comments that say that the services provided were really great. If I pay for a tour guide it is because I want to be given information about the area I am visiting. But if the guide doesn´t speak english fluently what kind of tour I am going to have?

Most of the trekking tour guides in Colca Canyon are charismatic. If you ask questions about the origin of the Colca Canyon for example, they are going to smile because they are not going to be able to answer your question.

Many tourists are not happy with the tour they took, but because it was so cheap and the guide was so friendly they feel compromised and don´t complain, because they payed 100 soles or 30 US for a 2 day trekking tour in the Colca Canyon that includes hotel, transportation, tour guide, all meals included. What kind of service I am going to have for that price? The worst.

If you check travel agencies in Arequipa, they have very nice offices, but when you take the tour you can easily realize that the “tour guide” who is not professional is not making it good. Unemployment rate in Arequipa is 46% so you can imagine.Easy to realize.

That is why the tour guides and the bus drivers are so eager to take you to eat to specific restaurants in order to get “comissions” . Restaurants give them from 5 to 7 soles per person and that is not really honest. Travel agencies make it good. The most affected are the tourists who are cheated all time. This topic is very delicate in Colca Canyon and if you ask the locals about what they think about tour guides you will realize that they are very unpopular in Colca Canyon and Colca Valley because of their abusive commisions.

If you want to check if a travel agency is good, just check different travel guidebooks.
For example, just a few ones were awarded by the Ministery of tourism o Arequipa. If one is awarded by the major of Arequipa or by the major of Colca Canyon you have an ace in your hands! Those are the ones that don´t really need exaggerated comments in trip advisor forums because they are very well known in Arequipa.

In my case I love travellers blogs because they are more personal .I like Trip Advisor too but we have to be very careful with those exaggerated comments...Thank you for your kind attention and good luck...

Motorcycling in Colca "not recomended"

by the Colca Specialist

Motorcycling is a fantastic sport and as I said before Colca Canyon and Colca Valley are the dreamed paradise of adventure sports, but to reach these places you need to take the road that goes from Arequipa to Puno before you reach the crossroads that will lead you to Colca Valley.
The way the peolple drive here is chaotic!

Alex Paul was an american tourist who rented a "chinese" motorcycle in Arequipa ,and he went alone by himself to Colca Canyon.

When he was coming back to Arequipa, at 5:50 pm aproximatedly,he took a curve and for his disgrace a bus from a company called "ANDALUCIA" was passing other bus on a closed curved!
These drivers are criminals on 4 wheels!

Alex Paul couldn´t make it and he was run over by the bus that invaded his side and died instantly.

Travel agencies in Arequipa are not specialized in adventure sports, and the tourist was not given the right information about the circuit.

First, he traveled alone without van support which is important and he was not informed that the road he was taking has the highest record of accidents and crashes beacsue of excessive speeds and careless maneuvers.

In Arequipa, there are no specialized motorcycling tour operators, so you should be careful about your tours.

As we said before, informality is a problem here in Arequipa ,so you should check your book guides and you can ask your tour operators for their licenses.

Besides you should check the equipment. Chinese motorcycles are not good quality and it´s like doing parachuting with old and torn parachutes!

Vacactions are important but your life is more important!
Tragic ends like Jean Pauls´s should be avoided!

Andalucía is the worst company in Colca Canyon. Don´t risk your life with companies like this!
This is a picture of one of the accidents ANDALUCIA had in Colca Valley.

As a personal eyewitness of Jean Paul´s accident ,it was terrible for me to see this young boy (23 years old) dying because of a fool who doesn´t care about traffic rules. Rest in peace Jean Paul wherever you are...

About Chachani volcano

by the Colca Specialist

Chachani volcano is one of my favorites volcanoes in Peru. As a mountain climber I love challenges and Chachani is one of my favorites.

Chachani volcano is 6,075 meters high and it ws one of the sacred mountains of the incan people in Arequipa.

When you see Chachani from the air is very impressive. When you see it from Arequipa, it doesn´t look s nice as Misti volcano ,but when you climb it, it is simply incredible!
The views are different and impressive. It seems that this "prize" is reserved for those that reach the top.

I hope you enjoy the pictures of one of the most interesting volcanoes of Arequipa: Chachani volcano.

Mismi: the source of Amazon River

In 1982 Jean-Michel Cousteau led a large scale scientific exploration of the Amazon from its mouth to its origin. The “Cousteau Amazon Expedition” budget was eleven million dollars and culminated in a six-hour television documentary titled “Cousteau’s Amazon” released in 1983.

It offered study information to last years and gave insights into the biology and geology of the largest river system on earth. This expedition was broken into three separate groups and the upper Amazon section was covered by “The Flying Expedition” tasked with exploring the upper third to Arequipa from the river's origin.

Traditionally, explorers and geographers defining the origin of a river system by tracking the larger tributaries using volume of flow while plying up stream, however in a system as complex as the Amazon basin with a dozen streams unpredictably occurring within any region at any time no consensus could plausibly be substantiated and the origin left to speculation, nonetheless half a dozen sites claimed title to “The Origin of the Amazon“ and until 1982 several were in the running.

Using an international team of twelve and bringing in expeditionary specialists from Germany, France, Argentina, Peru and the USA, Jean Michael Cousteau put together resources and logistics spanning a thousand miles of unknown jungle.

The Upper Amazon expedition (The Flying Expedition) included an Eastern European multi-axled reticulated Land Rover for use on land, a float plane Papagaiu, for air support and reconnaissance, and the Peruvian Air Force offered a high elevation helicopter to reach the upper levels of the
Cordillera de Chila mountain range in Peru.

Expedition support bases were established in
Cusco, in the mountains, in Arequipa on the Pacific coast, and high in the Cordillera de Chila at Caylloma for the quest to find the origin of the Amazon.

Many locations were remote, making it necessary to surmount language, terrain and logistical difficulties, as the mountain team made their way up the Río Selinque to the flanks of Nevado Mismi.

At this mountain's base, Jean Michael dispatched a team of German alpinists who climbed the 18,000 foot volcano and returned in two days. During their descent, they found melt water dropping into a fissure.

This cleft varied from two meters to half a meter wide, angling down the slope. This stream flowed nearly fifty meters before disappearing, emerging again lower down to flow between stones and continue its course.

They discovered that within the fissure, the water was deep enough to float a small craft and realized that they were presented with an opportunity. Utilizing pack llamas, kayaker Carl Ridley was brought to the site, and in June 1982, navigating by kayak, became the first person to run the origins of the Amazon. Later expeditions refined our understanding of the river's many origins and it's subsequent course to the Atlantic Ocean.
National Geographic Society Expedition

In 2001, it was verified that the main headwater of the
Amazon River has its glacial source on Nevado Mismi. An expedition of the National Geographic Society discovered that Carhuasanta stream flowing into Río Apurímac originates on the mountain's northern slopes and then runs its course through other tributaries and rivers to help form the main Amazon River. The fact that the headwaters of Río Apurímac are the source of the Amazon River was confirmed by Brazilian scientists in 2007, who pointed at Quebrada Apacheta as the most probable source of the Amazon.
